Healthy Ageing Planning Group

The Cardiff Health, Social Care and Well Being Strategy 2008-2011 identifies the well being of older people in Cardiff as one of its priorities.

Policy framework

The policy agenda for Older People's service development is driven by the National Service Framework (NSF) for Older People. NSFs are part of the Government's agenda to improve standards and equity of access to health and social services across the country.

The NSF for Older People in Wales sets national standards designed to ensure that as individuals grow older they are enabled to maintain health, well being and independence for as long as possible, and receive prompt, seamless, quality treatment and support when required.

Role of the Cardiff Healthy Ageing Planning Group

The Healthy Ageing Planning Group is taking forward a wide range of initiatives which meet many objectives within the National Service Framework for Older People and the Older People's Strategy. The group reports to the Older People's Advisory Planning Group. It aims to provide a co-ordinated, partnership approach to developing health promotion initiatives for older people. A wide range of initiatives have been implemented and delivered to date, many of which are ongoing and will continue to be developed. Actions include delivery of:

  • The Keep Well This Winter and flu vaccination campaigns
  • A small grants programme for voluntary groups
  • A falls prevention initiative
  • A range of activities delivered through Healthy Ageing Co-ordinators in local areas, and physical activity initiatives
